LITTLE WONDERS PRESCHOOL

Little Wonders Preschool provides an awesome learning experience for children ages 3-5!

Philosophy

At Little Wonders Preschool and Family Program we believe that children are natural, curious explorers that are capable of constructing and guiding their own learning. We follow an emergent curriculum and plan our day based on the interests of the children. It goes a step beyond “child directed” and allows the program to be “child originated" and teacher supported. Our learning environment is set up with purpose and thought towards what we value and promote as teachers and community members. We provide an inclusive and democratic space for children where their voices are valued and their differences respected. We support an environment of tolerance and acceptance of diversity, where kindness and community come first.
We provide open-ended toys and materials (scarves, blocks, collage material, stones) which allow children to manipulate and engage in a manner that reflects their own unique interests and views. We respect that children need time for group engagement, both large and small, time to be loud and move fast, as well as quiet time away from a larger group. Our preschool is designed to support all of those moments.
We recognize that each child arrives with her/his own set of knowledge, skills and ways of seeing the world. As teachers, we strive to get to know each child by accessing their funds of knowledge through connecting to the individual child and their family. We constantly observe the children to get a better understanding of their strengths and learning styles and tailor activities and materials to support their needs. In doing so, we can better honour each child’s unique perspective, and in turn, create an atmosphere of acceptance and respect for all.
With our philosophy and values in mind, we allow an emergent curriculum to guide us, recognizing that the more standardized the curriculum, the fewer children’s individual needs, strengths and desires are considered. However, because we have a strong focus on social-emotional development, we have drawn on the expertise offered through various curriculums that complement this area of development. These resources focus on the development of such skills as connectedness, problem-solving, self-regulation, social communication, perspective taking and executive functioning skills. We pull on components of these various curriculums yet are always aware of our unique needs within our preschool and will tailor the programs to best meet our needs.
